The Arts in the Classroom

Creating Navigators for Life

We believe in academic rigor as well as creative expression, social responsibility, and environmental awareness.
Fourth graders are working to become experts on state history throughout the year. This began with an arts integrated project on state symbols and icons. First students researched their chosen symbol or icon. Then they worked to collaboratively create a three dimensional map placing icons and symbols in their geographical locations. This cross curricular project was completed through the collaboration of Ms. Cristina and Mr. Alan!

"It was fun, but it took a while! We pulled through and worked together. History has hard in it, so why cant are resemble history? North Carolina is our state, and art is what makes it so great!"
-Nevaeh B., 4th grade
First grade integrates the arts through an author study on Lois Ehlert. Students explored collage art using the same medium as Lois Ehlert in Leaf Man, leaves! Like in the book students created creatures out of leaves collected at home and school.

"I made a turtle with real leaves just like Lois Ehlert!"

-Josie S., 1st grade

Fourth grade had arts integrated choices in their academic choice projects after learning about the phases of the moon in science. Students could choose to create a song, rap, or poem to perform and show their phases of the moon expertise! Check out this amazing moon rap!
